Sussex Indies Day 2012

The 2012 national Campaign featuring UK’s independent retailers has just been launched by Skillsmart Retail, the Sector Skills Council for Retail.

Independents’ Day encourages the public to buy at least buy one thing from their local, independent shop on 4th July 2012.

Never has there been a better time to celebrate than in the very busy Queens Diamond Jubilee Year – Torch Relay around Great Britain – the UK Olympic and Paralympic Games – to give custom to our local independent stores.

Over the next four months, retailers will be encouraged to download the campaign posters from http://www.retailindieday.com, celebrate the day in their stores and join forces with other retailers and town centre teams to hold special events to capture the public’s imagination.

More Information is available  Twitter @Retail_IndieDay –  facebook.com/independentsday or on the news section of www.retailindieday.com

Brighton Hove Sussex Business – Mary Portas High Street Property Review

Thinking about a business startup? With London 2012, Olympic year just around the corner, it could be the ideal opportunity to look closer again at the High Street again…

The Mary Portas’ High Street review ordered by Prime Minister David Cameron, has highlighted some interesting data released by British Property Federation (BPF)

  • A third of new leases on high street shops have break clauses compared to
just 3.9 per cent in 1999
  • The average lease length is now just 5.7 years
  • More than 47,500 rental tenancies included in the study
  • Research largest of its kind
  • Inflation has risen 94 per cent since 1989 – rents for standard shops have
risen just 24 per cent (a fall in real terms of 37 per cent)
  • Regional fluctuations –  as little as ten per cent south east region
  • Leases are in a mix catering for industry’s office, industrial and retail
    customers

Since the early 1990-s recession periods,  leases have become considerably more flexible, where they were often assigned for 20 years, and usually only upward rent reviews.

Sussex Fashion Trust including Brighton & Hove – Retail & Business Crime

Our sympathies to all those who have suffered losses in the clothing and textile, fashion industry over the past few days especially small independents who really didn’t need these kind of actions or losses.

It’s being estimated that one in ten UK businesses have been impacted by riots –

Over 10% of the UK’s retail and leisure businesses have been directly impacted by riots and looting with 48,404 businesses impacted.

It’s estimated that UK shops have lost more than £80 million in missed sales due to the disruption to trading hours caused by the riots across the country.

*** Once the cost of looted stock, an estimated £17.4 million, and the bill for repairs to damaged property, another £43.5 million, are taking into
consideration, shopping & price comparison firm ***Kelkoo predicts that the current overall cost to the industry is around £141 million so far…..

Prime Minister David Cameron unveiled measures this morning in Parliament, aimed at getting businesses back trading swiftly.

The period in which businesses can claim for compensation after a riot attack has been increased to 42 days from the previous 14, and some leeway has been allowed on tax payments on those affected.

Local councils are to be given the ability to offer business rates relief for affected premises and the liability for council tax and business rates on the worst affected premises will be stopped.

Cameron stated … “I give the people affected this promise – We will help you repair the damage, get your businesses back up and running; and support your communities.

“On repairing the damages, I can confirm that any individual, homeowner or business that has suffered damage to or loss of their buildings or property as a result of rioting, can seek compensation under the Riot Damages Act, even if uninsured.”

He further stated that a fund of £10 million is being put aside to help fund repairs to shops and businesses and there will also be another £20 million invested in a high street support scheme.

High up on the agenda is restrictive and unnecessary planning procedures that will be removed to help businesses with repairs, with the Prime Minister highlighting regulations which make it difficult to install security shutters as one such measure which will be scrapped.

“These steps are clearly very practical and funding of the high street is an unprecedented step in retail and possibly the first we have ever
experienced in retail history”…

“What’s clearly needed is the public support in the high street more than ever”…

“Retail Crime must now be put at the top of most council agendas, particularly with impending 2012 round the corner” stated The Sussex
Fashion Trust director Michaela Walker
