Vince Cable recently announced the allocation of £125 million Advance Manufacturing Supply Chain Fund for British manufacturing.
Lord Sugar debated British manufacturing in the House of Lords calling for more support for British Manufacturing not just by the government but also by consumers.
In his address to the House of Lords on the 8th December, Sir Alan Sugar, highlighted two key points calling for the government to allocate some of its fund to finance incubator factories, left empty in industrial units, to help start up businesses to manufacture their products in the UK.
Lord Sugar was quoted as saying ” low cost merchandise can’t be manufactured (in the UK) but high quality can be” …
“ Remember when Made in Britain was a very proud statement for manufacturers… and I do believe that we are still capable of producing quality products in this country…”
He stated that the lack of patriotism from consumers could be addressed by a nationally recognised ‘Made in Britain’ logo which the government should ‘dip their hands in their pockets’ to fund.
Earlier 2011, a ‘Made in Britain’Marque was launched and profiled by Stoves, the renowned Aga manufacturers, who conducted research and designed an updated British Marque – highlighted by Fashion Sussex. Quentin Blake, one of Britain’s best-loved illustrators and the man who created the world-famous images of the Big Friendly Giant and Matilda, was named the winner of the 2011 Prince Philip Designers Prize by HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
The awards saw a number of high profile fashion nominees including Stephen Jones one of the UK’s foremost milliners, who has transformed millinery since first opening a salon in 1980, and who has trained other leading designers including Philip Treacy and Noel Stewart. Sir Paul Smith, arguably the most successful British fashion designer ever. Since opening his first shop in Nottingham in 1970 he has built an international business that has defined the way three generations of men – and latterly women – have dressed.
About Quentin Blake
Quentin Blake is perhaps best known for his illustrations of Roald Dahl’s books, but his distinctive pen, ink and watercolour drawings have also accompanied the work of many other children’s authors like Michael Rosen and Joan Aiken. He has illustrated Dickens, Carroll and Lear as well as originating his own characters including Mister Magnolia, Mrs Armitage and Clown.
Since his first drawings appeared in Punch when he was 16, Blake has become recognised around the world in a 60-year career. He became widely known in the 1970s, presenting the BBC’s Jackanory, where he illustrated the various stories on screen. He became the first ever Children’s Laureate in 1999.

The ‘GREAT’ campaign was released during September 2011 showing off what’s great about Britain – a series of posters highlighting creativity to heritage, music to shopping and more.
The hope that the Olympics and Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee next year, to mark 60 years of her reign, will boost tourism, attracting an additional four million visitors, aided by a further billion pounds of free publicity.
Initial criticism was made whether Britain should have the reference ‘Great’ but clearly London now recently voted the capital of EU shopping provides every reason why.
London has been ranked as the best European city for shopping with competition from 33 other cities including Paris, Barcelona and Madrid in a research report, The first ever Globe Shopper City Index Europe,* published during November 2011.
London was described by the researchers as ‘a globe shopper’s paradise’The UK’s tourism minister, John Penrose, welcomed London’s top ranking, saying
…“The capital’s shopping experience – whether at Christmas or any other time of year – is second to none. Next year the eyes of the world will be on us as we host the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – this award once again shows that London really has something for everyone.” …
