The Made By Campaign – Made By Britain – Made By Sussex – Made By Brighton & Hove. With an anticipated change in tourist profile across Sussex during the Olympic buildup starting with The Torch Relay landing in Britain 18 May 2012, and continuing over the summer months, businesses were being urged during Autumn 2011, and continually, to consider their domestic marketing strategies and buy British manufactured products to retail, wherever possible, for tourists visiting the UK and regionally across Sussex, to take home with them souvenirs and mementos made from the region.
Summer 2011, Julius Arthur Quinn, a post-graduate designer from Brighton University, nominated in the MP’s ‘Made By Britain’ Hove & Portslade entry, designed a portfolio of Olympic inspired designs for fashions for the UK, Sussex and Brighton & Hove on behalf of The Sussex Fashion Trust. Designs were versatile and translated into graphics which could be used for various business 2012 promotional projects highlighting the diversity of designs and of course, promoting the various regional products on offer. Abigail & Thomas started out in the cotton fields of Kutch, in western India 1998. Being ideologists, they went in search of cotton that wouldn’t harm the environment or exploit Indian farmers. As textile technologists, they were appropriately qualified to pursue their vision & together with Agrocel – a farmers’ service centre, they developed a formula for growing & trading in cotton. They made sure they never lost sight of the Indian farmers’ needs in creating a solution that would ensure their economic stability & also protect the environment.
Two years later… Agrocel Pure & Fair cotton was born, it’s the only one of its kind & is used to make Gossypium products. All the cotton is organic & is fully traceable back to the farms from which it came. And the farmers receive a fair price for it, above the market price.
From India to Brighton Beach – Gossypium started its life on Brighton Beach, via a market stall, & from there Abi & Thomas soon learned what people were looking for in organic cotton & adapted their range accordingly.
Lewes, 2000 – A proper office, & shop to match, in the historic county town of Lewes. It’s a good place to live & grow a business.
Nine years later… Today Gossypium is a leading brand in Fairtrade certified organic cotton fashion. “All our products are designed in-house & we like to think we stand alone, naturally.”
Our ongoing company objective is to create a strong collection of classic products which respect Gossypium’s ethical & environmental values, at the right price for the consumer.
“Welcome to our world of ethical living!” Abi & Thomas Petit > Co-founders & Directors of Gossypium
Gossypium are winners of The Sussex Fashion ECO Award 2011 and will be launching the 2012 Sussex Fashion Awards which include Brighton & Hove at their store in Lewes, Sussex December 2011, and look forward to meeting local customers, other award winners and new shoppers.

BRC Retail Crime Survey 2011
Government, police and crime partnerships rely on data provided by The British Retail Consortium’s annual Retail Crime Survey and analysis.
The BCR need to keep up to date and this is Brighton & Hove’s Sussex chance to help provide necessary information by completing a short survey.
Reasons for completing this years survey:
1. It is the only comprehensive and up-to-date view of crime trends in UK retail
2. It provides key statistics which underpin the BRC’s media activity, ensuring retail crime achieves a high profile
3. It underpins the BRC’s political and lobbying activity, giving an evidential basis to our submissions
4. It gives credibility to BCR’s position and gives retailers a stronger voice
5. It provides retailers with a baseline on sector norms in crime losses and investment in crime reduction
